Greek Island Hopping Part 5: Santorini

Santorini had been on my bucket list for years. I’d forever longed to wander those blue and white streets and watch the beautiful sunset that it’s so famous for and last month, I finally got to tick it off my forever growing list of places I want to visit. It just so happened that my birthday landed on the same day that we headed to Santorini and as a treat we stayed in a luxurious 5 star hotel with our very own pool! I will be doing a full review on the Astro Palace Hotel so you can read all about how absolutely incredible it was soon so I won’t go into loads of details just yet. So, did Santorini live up to my expectations? Come and find out…p9030979The pool at the Astro Palace Hotel was incredible.img_6283And our own pool was pretty incredible too! Before Santorini, I had never stayed in a hotel with my very own pool before so this was such a treat!p9030964 img_7256img_7270The hotel even left a bottle of wine and a cake with a happy birthday message on it. The best hotel ever.

p9030948 p9030969The pool bar and restaurant was also amazing. One afternoon we sat on the four poster beds and ordered a feast.img_7464 img_7471Then we finished off with LOTS of cocktails…when you’re on holiday it’s totally ok to get carried away right?!img_7456You know those stunning shots of the Caldera view that you see all over Instagram? They’re mostly taken in the beautiful Oia. You should have seen my face when I finally saw this view! I couldn’t quite believe it was real. Would you believe we actually had to queue up to take this shot though?! And whilst you’re posing for a photo, there’s lots of people stood behind watching, patiently waiting to take their perfect shot of this view too.img_6279It almost looks fake don’t you think?! It’s like a little toy town.p9041060I could have spent hours just gazing at the incredible views in Oia and at all the luxurious hotels with pools looking out to the sea. p9041047Oia is also beautiful at night. We headed there one evening for a meal and to watch the sunset. p9030986It was SO windy and this dress was the worst idea I’d had all holiday. Those poor Greeks certainly got more than they bargained for…p9030988The sunset was so beautiful and clear and definitely the best I’ve ever seen.

img_7346Although it’s so romantic, you definitely won’t be alone whilst watching it. Just look at all those people!! We were actually told to get there about 2 hours before the sunset which we thought was crazy. We got there quite a bit before, bought a drink and watched it go down. Although you’re not alone, it was quite nice really as everyone claps and cheers as the sun sets and as the sky goes that beautiful colour.

img_7341 p9031008Watching the sunset is one of my favourite things ever.p9031013 p9031030 img_7359 img_7366After our meal in Oia we headed to Lolita’s Gelato. I’d read on The Fashion Mumblr’s Blog that this was a must so I dragged my boyfriend here and the ice cream was amazing!img_7379 img_7378We then drove the quad back through the windy and dark streets to Fira. It was such a scary journey as the roads had no lights but it was so nice to come back to this.img_7386A late night dip in the pool…img_7387The Astro Palace Hotel was in Fira. We had been recommended to stay in Fira by someone we knew. I think staying in either Oia or Fira would be amazing though. I’d say Oia was a bit more picturesque, like you see on the postcards and where you’re going to get your reaaally insta-worthy pics but Fira is also beautiful with gorgeous views and we found it to be livelier on an evening with more bars and restaurants to choose from so I guess it depends what you’re looking for but it’s easy to get from one to the other, especially if you rent a quad.

The pretty streets of Fira…p9020895Whilst we were in Santorini, we also explored nearby towns of Imerovigli and Firostefani which were both beautiful. We didn’t head to the beaches because we’d been to a lot of beaches on the other Greek Islands we had visited and well we hadn’t really gone to Santorini to see the beaches. p9030920 p9030933In Santorini I also finally tried my first Gyros! Well if I’m honest this was my boyfriend’s and I just ate half. I’m not really a huge fan of things like this so I thought I would hate Gyros but it was actually SO good. I imagine eating one of these stumbling back after a night out would just be heaveeen. p9030939img_7177 img_7180Santorini is a stunning and very romantic place. The amount of photo opportunities was crazy! Be aware that it is VERY expensive to both stay in a nice hotel and to eat and drink with a nice view though which is exactly what you want to do when you’re there. Time-wise, I’d say that about 3-4 days is perfect for exploring but if you’re staying in an amazing hotel like the Astro Palace then I would happily have stayed there for weeks if not months!

Recommendations:

Stay at the Astro Palace Hotel…you just have to see it.

Head to Corner cafe for an amazing breakfast. I’m talking nutella waffles and fruity crepes. Oh yes.

Watch the sunset in Oia.

Eat a meal or have a drink with a view of the beautiful Caldera. It’s worth the hefty price tag I promise!

And whilst you’re doing so take a billion pictures of the Caldera and well, every building in Santorini.

Head to Lolita’s for delicious ice cream.

Rent a quad or a scooter and explore the rest of the island.

p9031003So did it live up to my expectations? Well, I would go back in a heartbeat…
